White Pine Occupational Health Research LLC was formed in 2004 by Nancy Nelson and Richard Hughes.

 

Nancy Nelson, M.P.H., Ph.D., President. Dr. Nelson is an expert in occupational epidemiology, and has over twenty-six years experience in the field. She received her undergraduate degree from Kalamazoo College and her graduate degrees are from the University of Michigan's School of Public Health. She has worked for the National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, and Amoco Oil. She has conducted studies in the oil, chemical, automobile, health care, retail, food processing, insurance, pulp and paper, primary aluminum, and textile industries. She has studied injuries as well as chronic diseases. She authored the chapter on low back pain in NIOSH's Musculoskeletal Disorders and Workplace Factors, and she received the Alice Hamilton Award for her contribution. She has been a principal investigator on a grant funded by the National Institutes of Health. She is a member of the international scientific advisory board of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health, and she has been the recipient of the Alice Hamilton Award from NIOSH.

 

Richard E. Hughes, Ph.D., Vice-President. Dr. Hughes is an expert in biomechanics, especially shoulder mechanics. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and a doctorate in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. He also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in orthopaedic biomechanics at the Mayo Clinic. He has conducted research in ergonomics, occupational biomechanics, and orthopaedic biomechanics.  He has worked as an ergonomist at the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and as a human factors team leader at NIOSH. He has conducted studies in the food processing, insurance, pulp and paper, primary aluminum, forest products, and textile industries. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan, and he is the Director of the Laboratory for Optimization and Computation in Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the international scientific advisory boards of the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health and a member of the editorial board of the Open Biomedical Engineering Journal.
